okay, you're right, i could put in my own motherboard. but i'd also
have to have on-board sound, video and network. so, should any of those
have a problem in the future, i have to buy a new motherboard. there's a
reason most people disable on-board extras and install their own expansion
cards...

the ram is inadequate for the price. 128mb dimms are down to $35
(at least on saturday, last time i bought parts...)

a non-issue for me as well, but also realize that the newer iMacs
are coming out with a "car-stereo" style cdrom instead of the older tray.
someone out there is breaking them through normal usage.

certainly cheaper than a laptop, but then again, it isn't a laptop.
where's the battery? how much does this thing weigh, including the monitor?
etc... i built a 1.1gig T-bird for a client about three months ago, decked
out (256mb ram, KT7A motherboard, 20gb hdd, GeForce 2 with dual monitor
support, sb live, dvd rom, burner, win2k OEM) for $1300 including my labor.
add a 17" monitor and it goes up to $1500 (they had a 21", so no need for
it...) so what these guys are selling IS overpriced to me. $400 more for a
slim case, a lesser monitor, processor, ram, sound, video, one less cd
drive, etc...?! hell, i could even throw in a good set of speakers and an
optical mouse, an office package, usb scanner and maybe even a printer for
the price i'm paying for a slim case.

i don't think you're stupid, i think you're out of your gourd. and
i certainly wouldn't put down PC Power and Cooling (they gave me the idea
for my video card fan...) however, for the hobbyist and enthusiast, this
thing is over-priced. for a corporate environment, well, they have money to
burn.

don't need anything else?! i want higher end video. where do i
plug in the geforce 3? ooops, the on-board sound just doesn't cut the cake.
where does my sb live go? oh, yeah, i need scsi for my scanner. and a
burner. hmm.... i could do all this cheaper (and maybe even in a case with
roughly the same volume if i put a little shop-time and energy into it...)

np. and if you buy one, i won't laugh, make fun of you, etc...
because it's your money and you spend it. maybe it's better than i think.
i just have to see one in person.
