Or, as the UN-official buttons would have it, "2001, a spaced
Odyssey".
Ben Barrett, Jamie Chamoulos, and I went to the Country Fair. Ben
and I camped in the Swamp, which lacked the mosquitos this year to earn
its nickname.
No actual hippies were damaged by the presence of EUGLUG at the
Doors of Expression booth in the Community Village at the Oregon Country
Fair unless you count the two staples on my scalp from not noticing the
safety rail at the top of the ladder, but at least White Bird got to try a
new toy (the stapler) on my head. On the whole, White Bird made a painful
experience almost pleasant.
One big difference from 2000 was a nice lack of dialogs which were
repeatedly kicked off with "You shouldn't try to push big business at the
Country Fair". Never heard that once this year.
Actual disappointment was expressed at the antiquity of the
distributions we were pushing, "Couldn't you just burn the latest?". Yeah,
but getting them sent pre-packaged is good, too (and I haven't yet
acquired a CD burner). Can we consider buying a spindle or two of
pre-printed (with the OCF peach logo and blank lines for who actually
burned which version of which distro on what date) blank CD's to burn
install CD's of whatever's latest and greatest for distribution at the
Fair next year? I might well acquire a CD burner by then.
To our surprise, EUGLUG received $6 in two contributions (one for
a buck, one for five). The consensus among the members at the booth
(Patrick Wade was also in the booth representing efn) was to send the
money on to EFF. This decision was made a bit too late to connect up with
the EFF representatives in the booth, so EFF will receive a check in
EUGLUG's name in a bit (Any willing to add to the contribution are welcome
to contact me).
If a couple or three people would like to set up a card table at
the Free Speech Plaza by the Saturday Market to pass out the old distros
(and propagandize Open Source) on a few weekends, it won't cost more than
the time it takes to be there, and possibly the hearing loss if it's too
near the drum circle. We have an excess of obsolete CD's . I'd do it
myself, but I work Saturday nights. I need sleep before I careen about the
city and environs in a taxi for 12 hours.
I wonder how we can get RMS to the Fair. I suspect it would be
good for both the Fair and Stallman, and amusing and educational for all
on the periphery.
