What I ended up doing was copying the .gnome files from one user which worked 
to my home directory.  It worked.  I'm missing a lot of programs on the menu 
but that's ok.  

Jacob, I didn't even think about using diff.  That would have worked.  The 
nice thing I like about Linux I was able to fix almost everything I messed 
up.  If I was using windows I'd be out of luck and reinstalling it.  Also the 
nice thing about Linux I was still able to use the programs I normally use 
just under a different window manager. 

Randolph, I checked .xsessions in the home directory and there was none.  I 
did a little research on xsessions and it sounded like you could run a 
session across the network from another computer.  I think you were right as 
far as deleting the file.   I'm amazed on how easy it was to fix though.
