yeah, the woody install isn't quite ready yet.  Use potato,
then upgrade.

Yeah, Debian does it right. :)

By that, I mean /etc/init.d/ style.

The number of things Debian does correctly is amazing, but
most are subtle until you play with it, and go, OH cool,
that does make sense.
