the Linux-Sound-HOWTO says that the following should work if the .au file is in the same byte format as my computer. cat trumpet1.au > /dev/audio /dev/audio and /dev/audio[1-3] exist as do /dev/dsp[\n123] I know this laptop can put out sound cause it did under windows. I looked through dmesg to see if i could find any clues as to whether there is an internal soundcard but no joy. What are the best ways to get information out of the OS (debian 2.2) as to what's present in the hardware and what if anything do i need to do to get /dev/audio hooked into the onboard speaker? if the .au is not in the same byte-format i would get a different error msg than; bash: /dev/audio: No Such Device, right? Pointers to docs, useful advice, etc. would all be welcome. The machine in question is a toshiba 4900ct laptop (pentium 75) l@ _________ ae premise 1: The Truth Makes No Sense ( )__ pf ____( ) rn premise 2: Beauty Is Truth ( ) i. / / / / / / / / / / co conclusion: Beauty Is Unconscious / / / / / / / / / / er \@/ http://www.efn.org/~laprice g | __________________________/_\_________________________________________________
