Tim,
Ive been using reiserfs under mandrake for about a year now... works fine, no
issues yet.... I used mandrakes gui (during install) to setup the file
systems, you simply select the reiser file system from a drop down menu
listing of filesystems... surely debian has something simular
XFS is usually installed with your X server que no?
