I don't use pump, and I don't like 3c905's BUT, have you checked IRQ
and I/O conflicts?  Did you try moving the NICs to different slots?
The reason I don't like 3c905's is because I had a similar problem once 
with potato.  I could ifconfig the device, but couldn't send or receive 
packets, even after confirming no IRQ or I/O conflicts, and trying it
in every available PCI slot :(.
