Hello Fellow EugLugs:

I would like to quantify and clarify my misstatement concerning
encryption. I was only thinking about e-mail, which I could not care less
about encrypting. Several erudite members of our group mentioned SSH, and
other types of encryption that protect us from prying into things like
credit card numbers, bank accounts and etc. For the record, I do not think
the "back door" policies which many of you feel are what is being proposed
should extend to these transactions. Anything done via ssh concerning
financial transactions with commercial interests is legally protected, but
is also subject to subpoena should there be legal grounds to view these
sorts of documents. This is as it should be, and no, I do not think any
government entity has the right to look at this sort of communications
without due process.

That said, if anyone disagrees so strongly that he or she needs to tell me
about it, please do so privately. Flaming me or attempting to correct my
thinking does neither of us any good. My "delete" key works fine.

Regards to all,

                Jim Darrough
