You might want to use fetchmailconf which is a graphical frontend for writing your .fetchmailrc file with all the hairy bits in place. To use fetchmail you need to have a local SMTP agent running which delivers the mail to your local mail spool. (exim, sendmail or qmail are fairly wellknown MTA's with .deb's available)
