i hate to seem naive, but why am i asking for trouble when running as root?
security?  i already covered that.  save me from myself?  i think of it as
part of the computer experience.  if i f**k up my system, i just learned
something (and i back up, so this isn't a problem to me.  it's just time.)

You mean you want to remove the whole Unix
account thing?

good luck... that's a tall order.

If you log in as root, you WILL get a number of
things complaining that you shouldn't run them as
root.

Yes, you CAN avoid the whole login thing,
(Mandrake does), but if you try to run as root
all the time, you are asking for trouble.

Why not just leave a root logged in window open,
assign NO root password, etc?
