Sourceforge's owners VA (formerly VA Linux) are going to regret the choices they made, mostly because of the realities of the support they had. They chose to close the source, in an effort to make money (selling corp version of SF), but I really think they neglected to look longer term at the psychological effect on the very people they were counting on for the long term. It will be very hard for SF to sell a solution seen as a failure when people leave in droves.
I'm on the PHPGroupware list, and I can tell you this was brewing LONG before it went 'public'. Months ago in fact. PHPGW had some seriously complaints and concerns, and as one of the most active projects, they were entitled to some level of response. They weren't getting it, and it was clear the seeds were sown. Loic who runs Savannah (the GNU version of SF, where PHPGW (among others) is moving, will be using PHPGW heavily on the new site... Think of it as a Fork. Forks are good things.
