Some thoughts on Euglug Clinics, in general, and a bit on the
Growers Market, specifically (or why I think this should not be the only
clinic).
I don't see why we can't have more than one clinic a week,
although having more than one Euglug affair, of any sort, simultaneously
might be over doing it. For some people, Thursday evening is impossible,
even though most Eugluggers I actually know find it at least possible,
sometimes. But then, about all the Eugluggers I know I met of a Thursday
evening at Stan's or Mr. O's.
I've had feedback from some former subscribers to this list, to
the effect that some newbies feel very put-off by the perceived typical
geek anti-newbie attitude. That's the perception some have come away from
clinics with, and it was apparently reinforced on the list, although I
don't recall RTFM flames as such, ever (my memory, though, could just be
faulty). Whether justified or not, this is what I've heard from some
newbies. This, along with a possible dearth of power outlets (no, I
haven't checked, although there seem to be enough to power enough machines
for these impecunious Not For Profit Organisations to justify a contract
for a shared DSL) could be reasons for rejecting clinics at the Growers
Market.
While this wasn't my original intent (I was only looking for a new
venue for clinics), it looks likely that the Growers Market may attract
more newbies than Stan's or Mr. O's, just because there are more computer
newbies, let alone Linux newbies, hanging around there than around either
nerds or computer stores. They also have a crew of technically adept
people hanging about, TV people, some efn nerds, probably some I didn't
notice, which is why I think it could work.
We need more venues for clinics, we need more clinics, and clinics
for different audiences, and if we can get turnouts, on different nights.
Those of you checking out other venues for clinics are not off the
hook. Something else may be better for your purposes, after all. Anybody
who thinks we're all in this for one reason hasn't been paying attention.
