Sorry I don't have hints for you either, J... but I had been playing with xmatrix on the root a while ago, but put that away until Eterm or the like could do updating transparencies over a moving root.. for something like xearth, rotating very slowly, you could just make sure windows check the background every minute or so, but maybe I should look to something more advanced like 3dwm now that it's getting more mature...
