Check out CUPS, I'm sure you know... but there are so many front-ends for it, you could configure it with webmin even, afaik. If that doesn't work (to your satisfaction), why not try wine or maybe vmware (free demo anyway). I'm constantly amazed that there are so many printers out there with some great mechanisms, but so much of the control, I/O, and buffering are just crap. --I mean the more expensive models are often the same inkjets...
