http://gbootroot.sourceforge.net

provides a graphical tool for configuring and creating a root filesystem
it's connected to the UML (user-mode linux !fancy box-diagerams) project
which allows you to run a complete linux system in a userland directory,
so you can test your funky custom linux before deploying it.

They also have a bunch of scripts along the lines of make-debian, which
are specifically designed for cloning a debian system, for backup, restore
or cloning puposes.

It looks like it would be quite handy for building custom installations
for embedded terminals and other relatively small linux systems.
