aaaaarrggghhh!!! debian, once again. adding a line to fstab and watching
the kernel freak out because there isn't an extra blank line at the bottom.
pulling geforce out in favor of radeon, recompiling kernel and struggling
with DRI. reinstalling redhat to see if it works better with the radeon,
which results, ultimately, in no dice. turns out, simply an XF86Config-4
line, works great, but i like in-line kernel drivers, none of this module
crap. radeon works, so i download linux multiplayer test of Return to
Castle Wolfenstein. guess what, config files are written to the directory
it's installed to, which happens to be /usr/local/games, which is only
writable by root. game never gets started anyway, no matter which server i
connect to (may have inadvertantly fragged some games the other day...)
thought it might be kernel issue, tried "make mrproper" in redhat, which
screwed up their "proprietary" setup. can't compile their kernel.
downloaded latest kernel, recompiled and SOMEHOW lilo gets busted in the
transition...

me without a rescue disk.

so i put it off (this is christmas eve, got about an hour before i go to
mom's for dinner and presents.) i know i can fix this with my debian cd,
but i'm getting lazy. i get to mom's and my sister's picked me up the
retail Return to Castle Wolfenstein. got home, fixed lilo and... can't get
onto activision's website to download the linux binaries (connection
refused??? i was there yesterday!) need fix!!! and with the mp test's
problems, and my current state of mind (remember all that hot-buttered rum
that mom made?) i managed to get winxp installed. download radeon drivers.
yank network cable so no one can hack me. bust last working lamp in house,
left with ceiling lights (the one on my room doesn't work, which means i'm
in the dark...)

i played that game for 14 hours straight (which is why i try to avoid
playing games...)

i can get onto the activision site at work. so i'm planning on downloading
the binary and re-installing my linux system tonight (there goes my save
games... oh well, it'll feel MUCH more satisfying beating the game in
linux...) somewhere in there is going to be a major backup (it's LONG
overdue...) then i can wipe both drives and start all over again (remember
my partitioning scheme?)

okay, now that the christmas weekend rant is over, here's the new distro
plans :

reinstall debian and get everything backed up (4-8 hours)
reinstall debian AGAIN with new partitioning scheme(2-3 hours)

the distro will have it's own protected, happy little partition on which it
will reside. i'm going to follow the LFS instructions for the most part,
but i'm not going to rely on the LFS packages. instead, i'm going to
download all packages seperately, trying for the LATEST STABLE version of
each.

also, should have folding@home up within the next couple of days. add on
another Duron 800.

darkness... oh well, i'll snag a lamp from mom just like i gaffled that
bread maker and a space heater from her (did i mention that the heaters in
my apartment don't work?)
