In reference to yesterday's discussion about portsentry, is there any
software firewall for a stand-alone machine someone can recommend ?
(mdk 8.1, as client on cable (server services only needed on 'lo' , like
httpd, mysqld,...))

I would be happy with something that corresponds to ZoneAlarm where I can
quickly change settings, control in/outbound traffic (to block spying,
auto-updates, etc), several security levels (some apps require relaxed
security at connection time but are more tolerant when connected. With
ZoneAlarm I can select which applications are allowed/forbidden/or if I
want to be asked for localnet/internet client/server functionality ...
many options, all immediately at my disposal.

P.S. I did install portsentry, Advanced Stealth mode(because I didn't
know better) and find myself manually editing the settings file(s) when I
get locked out.

Maybe more when I see you at the clinic tonight ............. Horst.
