I have *not* made patches, sorry, but can tell you that CVS can give you
recursive diff's between your working copy (with your patch) and the
original source tree (if a cvs repository is available!)... so you
shouldn't need both trees locally... but then with cvs's poor handling
of new directories... and also those files not in the repository at all
would be a problem, too.
