I'm no expert, but I have had a standalone (no satellite receiver,
just a TV tuner) TiVo box for a few months.
My understanding is that without the subscription, it will still
record and playback just fine, but you don't get the channel guide -
you can only program in date/time/channel events (like older VCRs).
I opted for the $250.00 "lifetime" subscription, at $10.00/month for
the monthly subscription, it pays off in just a touch over two years.
It's nice to tell the box to record "Wall Street Week" (ok, "Battle
Bots" and "Junkyard Wars" too) without being too concerned about
schedule changes. Of course, TiVo can't handle short notice changes
(like the terrorist attack coverage) but if the published schedule of a
program changes, the TiVo will follow it without your having to do
anything.
Ok, I sound like a TiVo salesperson. I'm not, I work for a local
(Eugene) TV station - and I *do* fast-forward through the commercials!
