Well I guess they really ARE that dumb, jeez. 

Or maybe they figure it's time to shear the sheep and that anyone willing
to put up with this kind of thing is looking rather woolly.

Just when you thought you'd seen it all, they actually scan their network
looking for Linux and boot you off if you have a Free operating system?
 
It must be that viral GPL software, they're afraid if it gets loose on
their wires it will.. ah no wait it doesn't work like that does it.

This sort of thing probably makes sense if you are a MSN, AOL type of
person, but from the outside it looks like one of those horrid
co-dependent relationships, "without us you're nothing, who would you
turn to for technical support? It's a dark dangerous world out there so
just to be sure why don't you give us all your secrets after all you
trust us don't you?" Bleagh!
