I havnt had any issue with the focus model, and so I havnt tried to change
it... but I have messed with blackbox and backgrounds a lot.... Heres my
preference.

1) xdaliclock -cycle -root
2) bsetbg puffy.gif
3) bsetroot
4) xsetroot
Xdaliclock uses quite the load (if you reduce to 256 colors, its not too bad
though). bsetbg <image file name> works, and is easy. I tried xsetroot, and
bsetroot, but they were too much hassle!
I downloaded a bunch of BSD graphics, and set them manually, I havnt gotten
around to writing a program to cycle through a bunch of them.... but it
wouldnt be too hard...

Try out xdaliclock -cycle -root, not only does it tell you time, but its
colorfull too!
