This is a relatively easy task. Mandrake 6.2 has the ftpd daemon included
with it on the installation disks but I would suggest upgrading to Mandrake
8.2 for this task. If you are going to run this on the 'net' you may also
wish to run the firewalling capacity as well to protect your box.

As to the laptop, you can connect directly into the linux box to a
secondary NIC and let your linux box be your firewall/proxy for it thus
hiding the windows machine from the web and all it's little script
minions...

I want to set up a FTP server with Linux - for friends and maybe
a non-profit. I have a Pentium 200 with 48 mb ram with Mandrake
6.2 installed. I also have a DSL modem - the Intel Pro/DSL 2200 -
I know how to put it in the "box". I already have a domain
through efn - blessedforest.org. I have a separate computer - a
laptop so I don't want a LAN - nor do I need to share the
computer with Windows.

What more do I have to do to get this to all work together? Do I
need a new version of Linux, do I need a different modem? What do
I ask Qwest to do as far as DSL service? Do I need to buy an
O'Reilly security book?

thanks,

Ben

btw: my computer does have USB ports on it.
