Try:
gpm -m /dev/mouse -t imps2
Where /dev/mouse is pointing to:
mouse -> input/mouse0

My USB stuff, along with everything else I possibly can, is compiled as modules.
That way I compile the kernel once. These modules are loaded:
#lsmod
evdev                   4192   0  (unused)
mousedev                3904   1
usbserial              17504   0  [visor]
usbmouse                1776   0  (unused)
hid                    12560   0  (unused)
input 3456 0 [evdev mousedev usbmouse hid]
usb-uhci               21776   0  (unused)

Don't you just hate non-answers?

I hope this helps.
