I don't use Mandrake anymore, but I did use 6.2. I bet there are many
improvements in 8.2 vs 6.2 :)

As far as the CDRW, I always found it easiest to rebuild a kernel
without IDE CDROM support and with IDE SCSI emulation. I could
never get the kernel to not recognise my CDRW and IDE otherwise.
I like cdrchive -> http://www.drahthaar.clara.net/cdr.htm, but
it seems most use X-CDRoast as their CD burning GUI. There's
also GCombust, and KreateCD (only for kde 1.x), and probably others.

As far as the printer, check out http://www.linuxprinting.org/
Click on 'Printer Listings' ... oh wait, it looks like you did that :)
The hpijs stuff is too new for Mandrake 6.2, but is well supported
in 8.2.

Kword and printing from KDE apps is much nicer with KDE 3, btw.

I bet the newer release will recognize your CDRW correctly, and you
won't even have to think about rebuilding the kernel also :)

I could guess blindly that the phone cord isn't plugged in, or you
could give some more details ...
