Sure.  For a decade, everybody used dumb terminals.  Lots of software
got written.  To name a few...

        bash
        emacs
        vi
        top
        nethack
        larn
        twilight.zone (I'll mail this to you.)

I have used dual-screen X displays a few times.  xinerama is the way
to go.

Also check out vnc and x2vnc.  I like that combination.  Used to have
4 CRTs on the desk, 3 running X, and 1 running Windows NT.  I could
share the mouse and keyboard across all four.
