So, I'm finally setting up a home network, and I think I got the AP set
up okay for now, and my orinoco card is recognized by redhat 7.3 on my
laptop, but I'm doing something stupid and wrong, b/c it's just not
working. I can offer some clues from the packet info from the AP when I
re-activate the wirless card, but I cannot ping or otherwise reach any
network addresses. When I bring up eth1, the pc card (rj45 nic built-in
is eth0, which I've been leaving down), three packets are recieved by
the AP, with no retries: one to ether, one to ppp, and one to the AP
itself (says the "Forwarding Counts" page)...
I believe I have set the gateway, netmask and device IP addresses
correctly, and I'm accessing the AP via telnet and http over the LAN.
There is an option to turn DHCP on, but it seems to be only for the AP
to get its IP over ether; when I tried to get the laptop to request an
IP it didn't get any, but then again it might not have been broadcasting
right. I've tried changing to both, also, using both ifconfig and the
redhat-config-network droid, no luck. Can someone tell me about how
ifconfig, iwconfig, and iwpriv are supposed work together?
I have set up the mode, channel, essid, and even MAC address to match,
and the client (laptop) is recognized by the AP, but is not sending any
packets. So close, yet so far...
Also wondering what air net-monitoring tools people are liking, rsvp.
