Yes, avoid celeron would be my suggestion.
You seem to say you wouldn't try something other than Intel,
but I'll also suggest AMD -- the 900MZ, 950MHZ are at an amazing
price-point for their processing power... 1GHz is sometimes also a good
deal but usually more is charged for the "new scale".
(also avoid duron, for that matter; cache is a Good Thing)

I think it'd be hard to be the price you could get from a mail-order
distributor, then proceeding to get you installation and customization
done for a low-ball euglug bid... : )

BTW, I've heard tell (well, read html) that the instruction pipeline in
the AMD's current offering (XP's) is far superior (shorter, that is!)
than that of Intel's Xeon (also the recent P4/xeon).  Flames or
validation, anyone?
