Well, did the cross-over cable test OK?  Have you tried switching the configs so that 
you are using a different network card with the Win98 machine?  Have you tried 
straight-through cables and a hub/switch?  If you are sure the software setup is good 
it's time to consider the physical setup.  However, I'm a BSD man, and don't know if 
there are possible driver bugs or whatever in your setup.
