Can the windows box ping somewhere else on the internet, plugged right in to it?
What version of the kernel do you have on mandrake? # uname -a Linux www 2.2.17 #2 Mon Jan 22 15:37:02 PST 2001 i586 unknown Perhaps mandrake 8.1 comes with a stateful firewall configured. Try as root: # iptables -L -n Cory -----Original Message----- From: Bryan Kane [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 9:46 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [EUG-LUG:3633] Host Woes I've been trying to network with my wife's PC for awhile now and I can't get past this one hurdle. I'm wondering if there is any insights from the Eugene Linux sages about my dilemma. Here's the deal. I've got a linux box running Mandrake 8.1. It has two Ethernet cards, eth0 (to the internet via U of O) and eth1 (to my wife, Lynn). My wife has an old Win98 (1st ed.) box with a single ethernet card We have a crossover cable connecting us. Mine (linux) is 172.16.0.1 (eth1) Hers (Win98) is 172.16.0.2 My problem is this: I can ping from Linux to win98 but not from win98 to linux. Has anyone seen this before? On the Windows box has the same hosts file as the linux box, and has the IP address specified. DNS and WINS has been disabled, the gateway is set as my linux box's IP address, from what I can gather, my "lmhosts" file is also set up correctly. I've checked & re-checked, tweaked & re-tweaked my hosts, hosts.allow, hosts.deny, & other related files on the linux box. I know all the hardware is working just fine. I searched Google high and low and have read as many 'man' pages as I could see that was related to the topic (although being a novice, certain ones fly over my head at the second sentence). I showed my setup to another member of the EUGLUG list and he confirmed that most of my setup looked o.k. I can email you more info if you need it. I've been thinking about bringing my boxes to one of the meetings, but I want to make sure that I've tried everything I can at home before I lug our whole setup downtown. Any thoughts, anyone?
