A note to Bob Miller and other interested persons: The ISO for disk 7 was good (confirmed with md5sum) so I burned it onto a CD and ran "apt-cdrom add" to get it into my sources list. And it turned out that that's where Jigdo was located, as well as a couple other packages I was looking for.
I installed and ran netselect-apt and was simply thrilled that it found the fastest Debian mirrors for me out of a list of hundreds. I'm starting to develop a deeper and more satisfying relationship with this operating system. It sometimes surprises me in pleasant ways now. I see a design integrity and robustness which I admire. But we still have some difficulties. Kmail will not authenticate with my SMPT server. So I had to install Evolution which does. My sound card is throwing fits with KDE (lots of error messages which I just ignore). And I haven't gotten around to configuring my desktop menus and applications so that they'll behave the way I want. Overall though, I'm feeling satisfied that, slowly but surely, things are coming together. Thanks for your help.
