then there's also my fav:

zcat file.gz > file
and of course
bzcat file.bz2 > file

and also

zgrep "pattern" /var/log/kern.log.4.gz
zegrep
zless file.gz
zmore
zdiff file1.gz file2.gz
zcmp

and one I just discovered:
gzexe (1)            - compress executable files in place

It compresses executables and uncompresses them on the fly, but I haven't
tried it.  Part of the gzip package.
