Ok,  I'll answer my own question.

The DesiredSSID setting in /etc/wlan.conf needed to be "default" not
"linux-wlan" like the directions say.
Run /etc/rc.d/rc.wlan stop
and
/etc/rc.d/rc.wlan start
and away we go.
