Subject: Mail processing back to normal

Our apologies for the recent mail server problems. A combination of
factors led to our mail server gradually falling behind on delivery, and
even when we turned off the spam assassin software, we continued to find
the backlog going unprocessed. Basically, it'd gotten so far behind that
catching up wasn't happening, and the mail server was stuck in a bad hole
that it couldn't dig itself out of. This led to not accepting new mail,
or new connections to send mail.
Our fix was simple: move all of the mail that it was still trying to
process, and let it start with a clean slate, and then feed small piles of
older mail, watching the system carefully until everything was handled.
We've baby-fed the server along for the last 2 days, and it looks to be
solid now.
While some mail was _delayed_, no mail was lost (some went undelivered due
to one side not answering within 5 days), and some mail was even
double delivered (Those Oct mails some people found in their mailbox, and
some recent ones). Double Delivery is due to a safeguard in mail handling
- if it isn't sure it delivered it, and it still has it, deliver it again.
Our sincere apologies on behalf of the system administrators and myself,
and we've taken steps to ensure that this sort of thing won't happen
again. Spam filtering will be back within 24 hours of this notice going
out. (Those who want to opt out of filtering and have not already told
us so, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED]) The rest of you will be glad to see the
spam gone again. Spam Assassin's filtering is a big success according to
the many emails asking for when it will return we've gotten.
We continue our improvements behind the scenes, and we think you'll like
what we're working on... including virus filtering, better opting in/out,
and user configurable filters.
