[this post is a software review]

Saw this on freshmeat today:

About:
Baudline is a real-time signal analysis tool and an offline
time-frequency browser. It has a built-in tone generation capability and
it can play back audio files with a multitude of effects and filters.
Designed for environmental analysis missions that range from modulation
parameter measurements to searching for transient signals that go bump
in the night, baudline combines fast digital signal processing,
versatile high-speed displays, and continuous capture tools for hunting
down and studying elusive signal characteristics.

This is some Truly Cool software... enjoy, if you care to!!

my explanation:
Dragging the cursor around any view window acts like putting the
phonograph needle to that part of the sample, played at the rate
equivalent to the cursor's... open the waveform window for a more
familiar view... the main view is an FFT, and the middle button brings
up a log scale, which can be stretched along the main axis. the "play
deck" controls have easy reversal, and ff/rew (2x I think); also present
are sliders: speed(.008-16%), scale (0.125-8%), and shift(-22050Hz-
+22050Hz), as well as a gain control and a channel-mixing box.
The zoom controls are pretty handy; this is the sort of application that
maximal screen real estate is good for.
Note that they suggest at least a 200MHz pentium w/ 64megs
They have a funky disclaimer:
      * This software is beta which means it might be unstable.
      * You are not allowed to distribute or reverse engineer this
        product.
      * This product comes with no warranty.

  Ciao!!
