Michael,
Your friend can subscribe to this llist too (no charge...). We can probably
talk him through his internet setup... and other things if needed.
Dinner is a nice though... maybe he can bring pizza or something to a weekly
clinic if he wants (he can also bring his comptuer to a weekly clinic for
help!). Clinics are held at EFN World Headquarters (43 W.Broadway) from
6:30pm to 9:30 or so...)
There are some other options he may want to consider...
Assuming he has some way to access the internet, he can search google (I find
lots of stuff this way). He may be able to access IRC channel #linux or
#linuxhelp. There are newsgroups (hey..newsgroups arent dead yet!) such as
comp.os.linux (and many under it) Theres even eug.comp.os.linux (Its still
there, but I dont see posts very often!)
Some basic info regarding setting up internet access.
You will probably have no luck using a "winmodem" People have gotten these
software based modems to work under linux... but more people have had nothing
but frustrations with them.
Depending on what linux distributuion your using, there are likely some tools
to help you set this up.
I use slackware a lot, and it has pppsetup (note: in *nix, we dont use com1,
com2, com3, com4, we use /dev/ttys0, ttys1, ....) (notice things start with
0, not 1... this is the norm in linux... programmers start at 0 not 1)
To help you with your internet installation, we will need critical info, like
what distribution, what ISP, phone number to dial, DNS server you use, ...
