It uses line breaks instead of paragraph breaks - which is good for poetry. Why don't you just use Gimp and make imagemaps of everything and then make pdf versions of your content. Imagemaps allow for much more flexible design layout. Almost every Linux program outputs to ps and you can use ps3pdf to convert it to pdf.
If you are willing to use something with as few features as composer, use open office html editor - it is much better. I have also used this for about a year and liked it much better.
You could also use Abiword pretty soon - I use it to convert files to xhtml format. The development version suppports tables. It is like lyx in that it is structured but it uses more current technologies. It integrates with gimp and has a lot of useful features like on the fly spell check, thesaurus, etc.
The coffecup html editor has a preview but you still code by hand.
