There are versions of the WinTV cards which feature native MPEG2 encode. This feature does not AFAIK have decent Linux support. If it did, I would be more interested. Also, there is no support at this time for DV as a v4l device. Unfortunately, the WinTV cards are still limited to 640x480, leading me to conclude that a DV bridge would be a better solution, even if that meant it would not be self-contained.
