Mine too. Mine always launches kdm on boot. That's kind of weird -- Debian, which usually bends over backwards to be standards-correct, has scripts in rc2, 3, 5 and 5.d to start not just kdm, but also gdm and xdm. It completely ignores the runlevel in /etc/inittab.
