Mine too.  Mine always launches kdm on boot.

That's kind of weird -- Debian, which usually bends over backwards to
be standards-correct, has scripts in rc2, 3, 5 and 5.d to start not
just kdm, but also gdm and xdm.  It completely ignores the runlevel in
/etc/inittab.

It looks like you could disable gdm by putting something other than
/usr/bin/gdm into /etc/X11/default-display-manager, but I didn't find
any documentation to that effect.
