Yeah, Gentoo's not quite LSB compliant, but it's compliant *enough* that
I haven't had any issues building anything (except Frozen Bubble, which
I fixed with 2 symlinks). And, of course, when you use The Source, it
takes care of lots of these issues anyway, plus everything goes real
fast and seems to be real stable, even with all bleeding-edge software.
Gentoo also seems to have taken lots of good stuff from the *BSDs, especially
of the Open and Free varieties. I think portage, the package management
system is the true strength of Gentoo. I think I've had about 1/2 dozen
build errors on this box since June, and these have gotten way fewer
recently, as portage has begun to be a very mature piece of software.
A couple of weeks ago, I updated Gnome to 2.2, along with updating the
rest of my system to the latest and greatest, all compiled from souce.
This is what I typed to do it.
emerge sync
emerge -u portage
emerge -u world
No click-o-rama, no having to configure an update program to point it in
the direction of a server that's not overloaded. It's not quite the
ports system and not quite apt, but I think I like it better than
either.
Plus, Gentoo has <flameproof suit on>take the cruft out of runlevels,
a long-overdue, and hotly debated feature of Gentoo.</flameproof suit
off>
And what other distro built a live-CD that you can boot, and play Unreal
Tournament off the CD. I've got a couple of Windows folks at work who travel
with laptops, and they have disks for that reason only.
Cheers,
Dennis

Voice or no voice the people can always be brought to the bidding of the
leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being
attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the
country to danger. It works the same in any country.
