Not at all. What happened was 2 disks died on the box that hosts ftp.oregonstate.edu. They were part of a 5 disk RAID 5. When the disks were replaced and the RAID 5 rebuilt it caused some corruption to some of files. Reiserfs problem or something similar. Now since this was the central rsync server for all Gentoo mirrors, some of those corrupted files were "mirrored".
The issue bob was having was that he was "merging" ebuilds as a non-root user which didn't have access to /root/.kde/* Hope this clears up any confusion.
