BAGGAB: let me know if you have any more problems with your router - I think I've got the same one: SMC Baricade 4-port Router/Switch. I've been using mine for a year and a half now w/o much trouble. I _don't_ have DHCP enabled and use the /etc/hosts* file instead. I've used it both with an external modem connected to it and with a WAN uplink connection. One thing you should definitely do is make sure you have the latest firmware installed.
