Michael,

I think your ComputerBits column had a typo error.

I certainly share your concern about Apple's lack of support for the Linux folks.

As a 2+ year Mac user AND a long time Unix professional (first encountered Unix in the magical year 1984; HP's HP-UX on an HP9000 workstation. also got first exposure to another OS that year, not Mac, but PC-DOS );

I may be one of a growing number of folks who reside in BOTH the Mac and Linux camps. I am a paid-up member of PMUG and I am considered a member of at least 3 Linux User Groups ( LUGs).

I wonder whether we can do locally some small joint effort(s) between our MUG and some of the local LUGs?

For example, I subscribe to the Eugene LUG ( euglug ) e-mail list and recently participated in a discussion on the relatively poor support in Linux for Firewire ( vs. USB 2.0 ).

I questioned the folks of the euglug e-mail list about when Firewire support on Linux would be "ready for prime time". A knowledgeable euglug member explained to me that many euglug folks are poor students, who can afford to buy cheap USB devices. Thus, the Linux developers and testers have ample opportunity to write drivers and test them for the USB devices. But, high-performance Firewire devices are beyond the budget of the poor student Linux developer/tester.

So, believe it or not; there is a world where USB 2.0 is better than Firewire: It is call Linux.

This is a source of great embarrassment for the LUGs; and it should be embarrassing to Apple as well.

If our PMUG could collaborate with some local LUGs; in conjunction with some local Apple resellers; maybe provide LUG members with free loaner of Mac system(s) and Firewire peripherals;
we could help each other to eliminate a situation the is/should be embarrassing to everyone, especially Apple.

hope I am not wasting my breath here,

Rodney
