Yes, but when it comes to packaging your own distro, what doesn't?
For instance, there is documentation in the BBC and PLAC distributions
regarding the making of a custom boot [CD] image, so that it has, say,
your host keys, or your bookmarks, or your favorite app.  These are very
space-limited, as are uclinux installations; all of which do offer
fine-grained control over what is in them and what is not  ( =
I'm trying to get a handle on, generally speaking, why one distro (like
gentoo) is better than another when it comes to an embedded port.
Other than those distro's which are specifically built for that, like
the zaurus product or uclinux.  Here's a snippet from the uclinux
project that highlights what I mean:

    * Common Linux API
    * uCkernel < 512 KB
    * uCkernel + tools < 900 KB
