That's because newer versions of portage have autoclean set as default. See /etc/make/globals... # Set to yes automatically run "emerge clean" after each merge # Important, as without this you may experience missing symlinks when # downgrading libraries during a batch (world/system) update. AUTOCLEAN="yes" It's possible that some people set this in /etc/make.conf to NO and running emerge clean is a good way to check.
