    knoppix: knoppix textmode

    root# mount /dev/hdaX /mnt/hdaX
    root# chroot /mnt/hdaX /usr/bin/passwd root
    Changing password for user root
    New password: XXXXXXXXXXXX
    Retype new password: XXXXXXXXXXXX
    root# umount /mnt/hdaX

Replace the X's with the right characters for your configuration.
