It doesn't matter what directory you're in.

The i686 was the Pentium Pro which was released around 1996.  Any CPU
made since then has been an i686 architecture (except maybe the AMD
K6, not sure).  Your 2 GHz Celeron is definitely an i686.

On your computer, you can use RPMs for any of those architectures,
i386 through i686.  i686 is best optimized for your CPU, but it's not
a big difference.  That's why RedHat and Debian, for example, only
release i386 versions of most packages.  (i386 runs on everything
since the 80386, which Intel released around 1990).
