If you're running Debian stable or any other older distribution, your
whois command may not be able to resolve domains in the .ORG tld. The
administration of .ORG changed about a year ago, and the name of
the server to contact changed then too.
Newer whois commands have the new server name built in, but if you're
stuck on an older server, edit or create /etc/whois.conf and add this
line.
.org whois.networksolutions.com
That's what I learned about Linux today. (-:
