It seems my ISPs' nameserver(s) were down yesterday
until after 3PM so I could only access the sites for
which I knew the IP address. Needless to say, I
didn't know too many so my surffing was very limited
yesterday.

Any suggestions for public nameservers to use in such
a situation? Would it be too difficult for an
inexperienced Linux user to set up a local nameserver
or caching-only nameserver for just my computer(s)?
And if so, would that be any help if the situation
happened again.

I guess you really do get what you pay for and at $6 a
month, Access4less is pretty inexpensive. I was happy
when they also provided a news server because I didn't
expect much. Now That has been down for about a week
and I have been using a free newserver -
freenews.netfront.net - which is fine as long as I
don't want to post to a newsgroup. So now I want to
ask if anyone has knowledge of a public or free news
service that allows posting also? Granted, I don't
post very often but I would like to be able to do so
when I want to.

BTW, Google truley is your friend. I have a short
list of some nameservers (mostly in Europe) and I got
the news server mentioned above from searches on
Google. I haven't tried the nameservers yet and it's
too bad I had to wait until my ISP was back in
operation to search for them. Someday I will be able
to afford a REAL ISP again.
