Yeah, gnome-terminal and console do this too.  Personally, I prefer
multi-gnome-terminal -- it is not a default package but a VERY nice one,
supporting tabbed sessions (similar to konsole, but better IMHO)...
it does gamma correction and [configurable] text shadowing as well.
Your script could easily be adapted to it... however I use settings per
background, not random, so what would be handy for me is a simple
textfile for setting up a list of sessions (or this could be done in the
gui, that'd be nice too!) that relate each desktop image with MGT's
image settings.  I loved the tabbed sessions, I couldn't live without
them now!  Eterm Rocks, I just have hardly used it since I gave up on E.
