I got close... apparently I don't have [the correct?] RealPlayer codec
support in mplayer. Initially, I discovered that RealPlayer no longer
works on my system : /

I had RealPlayer 8.01 installed by RPM, which I got from the
community-supported players... the libc6 RPM from Real.
I cannot remember if I have used RP since my upgrade from 7.3, so it
might be broken from that (I used to use it sometimes, it seemed to work
fine) -- anyway it doesn't bring up a window and keeps a background
process running, to no apparent effect. When I did a 'ps -Aefwww' before
killing the realplay process, I noticed that it had been called with a
/tmp file(this one had been started by my browser, but also with similar
[read: no] effect. I examined this/tmp file ('aw_streamer.pl') I then
tried mplayer on the.rm link embedded therein:
rtsp://boss.streamos.com/real/audible/content/bk/high/000107/bk_high_00
0107_sample.rm
(BTW, your second link below, the javascript one, is a local link and
thusly cannot be tried by the rest of us)

So, calling mplayer on the command line, followed by
the discovered .rm URL, did the correct buffering as it connected, but
then complained that:
Cannot find codec for audio format 0x6B6F6F63.
(among other things, like trying to sucker me into hacking on my mplayer
config, while helpfully suggesting that I "Read the RealAudio section of
the DOCS!" Ha!)

I don't have time to get into mplayer now, but I would say mplayer is
the way to go, unless you really like Real's player (cough, closed,
cough, proprietary)... Mplayer can do *much* more, including saving
and/or converting the streams you enjoy for personal use.
Hope this helps = )

happy streaming,

   Ben
